Match Report | Bolton 2-2 Shrewsbury

16 April 2024

Shrewsbury put in a excellent performance full of character to battle their way to a 2-2 draw at Bolton.

In what was a captivating game from start to finish, Salop opened the scoring thanks to a brilliant goal from Dan Udoh.

Bolton pulled level through Cameron Jerome. But we got ourselves back in front just before the interval with a truly outstanding strike from Jordan Shipley.

Despite some resolute defending, Bolton did equalise again thanks to a 20-yard strike from Paris Maghoma.

Town, though, dug in from that point on to pick up what was a very deserved point.

Teams news:

Boss Hurst opted to switch things up for the trip to Greater Manchester with Town shifting to a 3-5-2 formation.

It saw Joe Anderson join Chey Dunkley and Morgan Feeney at centre-back with Tunmise Sobowale at right wing-back and Mal Benning on the left.

In midfield, Carl Winchester and Elliott Bennett sat just behind Shipley with Tom Bloxham and Udoh the front two.

Bolton lined up in a 3-1-4-2 system with George Thomason in the holding role. Jerome partnered Aaron Collins in attack.

Report:

In what was a bright and entertaining opening 10 minutes, both teams created chances to open the scoring.

It was Town who threatened first when Shipley whipped in a dangerous free-kick which Feeney headed over the bar.

Bolton then went straight up the other end with Marko Marosi doing well to push away a fierce drive from Collins.

From the resultant corner, Jerome glanced a header towards goal that Benning diverted onto the post.

The game was proving an even and intriguing contest with Salop going on to open the scoring just past the 20-minute mark.

The goal was a moment of real quality with Bloxham first doing outstandingly well to drive down the right flank and pick out Udoh with a pinpoint cross.

And Dan then did the rest with the striker producing a wonderful finish to arrow the ball into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later and Hurst's men were a whisker away from doubling their advantage when Bennett sent in a dangerous cross.

And that was met by Dunkley who powered a header at goal only to see his effort kept out by goalkeeper Nathan Baxter.

It was in the 40th minute that Bolton pulled level when - following a goal-mouth scramble - Jerome scrambled the ball in from close range.

That strike was tough on Town who had deserved their lead.

But they got themselves back ahead in spectacular fashion just before the interval with a piece of magic from Shipley.

Just like at Reading, Salop had a corner that Bennett clipped to the edge of the box.

And Shipley then produced a sensational piece of technique to smash the ball in from 20 yards.

Just five minutes after the re-start, Bolton had a brilliant chance to pull level.

After Marosi made a smart stop to deny Collins, the ball broke for ex-Town man Nathanael Ogbeta who looked destined to nod in from close range.

But Feeney read the situation superbly and made an outstanding goal-line block to keep the ball out.

As the clock ticked past the hour mark, Bolton were seeing more of the ball with Marosi making two good saves to deny Maghoma.

The keeper then produced an excellent, one-handed, stop after Kyle Dempsey flicked the ball towards goal.

Despite Town's best efforts, Bolton did pull level just past the 70-minute mark when Maghoma produced a wonderful strike to curl the ball in from 18 yards.

Salop then almost got themselves back in front immediately when Udoh hit the byline before sending in a cross that Shipley fired over.

Bolton put Town under heavy pressure for the final 10 minutes. But Hurst's men defended superbly throughout.

Jack Iredale did last the ball against the post in time added on.

Overall, though, there could be no denying Town more than deserved what was an excellent point.
